On the one hand, the priority goal of running a firm is to profit despite economic trend and situations in the whole world. That is to say, a company could survive from the merciless and competitive market only when revenue intends to cover daily operation cost. Managers are likely to design various investments such as portfolios and equities to avoid the situation that the shortage of fund happens to enterprises accidently. To be more specific, a top-level manager like chief finance officer has to pay numerous efforts to guarantee the operational activities of an enterprise.

On the other hand, there are still some other decisive roles for firms to play in the society. Like individuals who need to observe the laws and restrictions that governments just enact, enterprises are required to cooperate with governments to help some citizens who are in poverty. For instance, Walmart tends to offer a temporary shelter for those homeless people after markets closed. Meanwhile, a firm can be regarded as a benchmark or a pattern for children because of their goodwill. Thus, businesses have an educational responsibility to foster young generation for the society.

In conclusion, companies actually play various roles in society though gaining money is an indispensable part of operations.
