Suggestion on doctor shortage issue

Hong Kong underwent the measles outbreak earlier in this year. Many people were worried about the situation of measles and seeking assistance in public hospital. That provoked much pressure to public hospitals because of doctor shortage. This essay will share couple solutions on this crisis.

First of all, the usage ratio between private and public hospital needs to be rearranged by launching new policy. Nowadays, almost 90% of patients choose to receive medical treatment in public hospital. According to data research, one doctor, who is working in public hospital, needs to take care over eight hundred patients every day. The number is scaring and needs to be improved. Local government could provide subsidies for citizens to purchase medical insurance. Public prefer to go to public hospital because of the low cost. As long as the cost of private hospital is reduced, some citizens would choose private hospital for better services. Meanwhile, government could also provide tax incentive for private hospital. Helping to bear a part of the huge medical cost. Therefore, those private sectors are motivated to reduce price for public receiving medical treatment.

Secondly, authority should offer attractive salary package for non-local graduated doctors. There is much concerned voice about the tough admission examination for foreign doctors. In my opinion, I do not think this is the biggest obstacle for them. Higher requirement for doctors is an advantage for public actually. It is a better protection to have a better quality in local. The fact of foreign doctors refuse to work here is the salary package which is insufficient attractive comparing with other countries. The authority should provide housing allowance because of the expensive renting fee. Besides, an attractive salary is motivating doctors with great quality to leave their hometown and work in Hong Kong.

Thirdly, it needs to increase the number of Medical School. There are two Medical Schools in this city. Under five hundred students, the potential doctors, are graduating this year approximately. Hong Kong is facing an elderly problem which means the number of patients is escalating. Some of the graduates might choose to work overseas or become different kind of specialists. Therefore, establishing more Medical Schools could ease the doctor shortage issue. It is tackling the root cause since increasing the quantity of doctors.

To conclude, the usage ratio between private and public hospital needs to be rearranged by launching new policy. Meanwhile, authority should offer attractive salary package for non-local graduated doctors. Furthermore, building more Medical Schools and establishing more medical programmes could generate more doctors each year.
