In modern world, it’s possible to shop, work and communicate with people via Internet and without any face-to-face contact with others.

To what extent is this a positive or negative development?

Recent years have witnessed numerous radical changes that the Internet has brought to us, typical examples of which are online shopping and working. From my own perspective, I deem that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Admittedly, one problem associated with this Internet-based behavior is that it may have deleterious effects on our emotional quotient. Scientists have long convicted that our ability to understand others’ emotions lies in how we detect subtle changes of facial and body gestures. And it is only through face-to-face activities that we develop this skill. Ineluctably, screen time will lead to less face-to-face time with others, exerting an adverse impact on our EQ.

However, this behavior also has extraordinary upsides. The paramount one is the convenience that comes with the Internet itself, which could promote the efficiency of our life and work. For instance, in the old days, say we were going to send a document to our boss, it could end up with long hours in traffic congestion and a loathed mental state for work. By contrast, now in this unprecedented age of ubiquitous Internet access, it is only a two-minute task sending an email. In other words, we no longer need to do repetitive or time-consuming work, and thus online activities boost our productivity.

 Moreover, the benefits go beyond individuals, because it also facilitates economy growth. In truth now the Internet has become a pillar of many traditional industries. For instance, in China, the logistics industry surges owing to astronomically increasing products sold every second online. Such examples are too numerous to enumerate.

In conclusion, albeit Internet-based behavior can have bad ramifications, it also has tremendous benefits, not only for each individual but also for the whole economy.
