Nowadays with the development of facilities and other educational resources, universities can provide a variety of course for their students, leading to an argument that should student be allowed to learn whatever they like or only practical study.

The reason for allowing students to choose the course according to their interests is mainly to release the potential creativity of them. Driven by the interests, they can entirely contribute themselves into what they love with a great passion and produce amount of outputs. For instance, a potential painter makes use of his gifts by practicing in an art class instead of a science class. In addition, this encouragement can also promote the development less useful but valuable subjects such as classical art, history and literature due to more class enrollments from people who like them.

However, there is another opinion that universities should only concentrate on useful courses such as those linked with science and technology. Admittedly, those subjects meet more social and economic needs and provide a solider basement for students when they seek for jobs, especially in some fields requiring high technology. But from my perspective, it’s unnecessary to force students to study it since people can take vocational training from not restricted to universities but also companies which is more specialized and professional. On the contrary, people can only benefit from the resources of different fields with a relatively lower cost in the universities.

To sum up, although useful courses may fit with the needs of work, I think universities should give more freedom to students on their class choosing due to the activation of creativity and promotion of weaker subjects.
