Some people say that music is a good way of bringing different cultures and ages together . To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

 It is beyond doubt that music has been playing a significant role on people around the globe. Some may view that it is the best approach to uniting people regardless of their races, ages and nationalities. Others deem that indigenous music may intensify conflicts among different cultural groups. My opinion lies with the former.

 To begin with, music conveys a message of unity which is beyond speech. Undoubtedly, music is a universal language that one does not need any knowledge to comprehend. Music appeals to one’s perception and feeling, irrespective of one’s skin colour or cultural background. The pop song ‘Gangnum Style” sung by a Korean star, Psy,  is a telling example. The song depicts the nightlife in Gangnum and has become the biggest hit in Youtube. While not many know Korean language, its prevalence is largely owing to its catchy tune and hilarious music video. The fact that people across the nations share the same liking towards this song gives a solid proof to the  uniting power of music.

 In addition, music connects people from generations to generations.  In many cultures, music is widely used during rites of ritual, implying that it is a representation and embodiment of national and family solidarity.  If there is a wedding, people no matter rich or poor, old or young will recognise the wedding song immediately. So powerful is music that  it could establish a link among people of different ages, reinforcing the sense of identity among them.

 In contrast, some may argue that a fraction of music promotes hate speech and disseminate racist thinking. This could be true and thus, we should never neglect that music could also be used to hold against the message of building a harmonious global village.

 In light of these facts, despite a proportion of offensive music, music promotes co-existence among various cultures as well as harmony among all walks of life because of its universal attractiveness and its unifying nature.
